Originating in pre–Islamic Arabia, qasidas have come to refer to any poem of a certain length in Arabic, Persian and Turkish literatures. Qasidas are also composed to celebrate festivals and are an important expression of devotion for Ismailis in Central Asia and Syria. Alwaez Allahbaksh takes us on a mystical journey through the world of Qasidas.

Celebrate Eid al-Adha with an enchanting musical performance held at the Ismaili Centre Toronto in 2015. Dr. Karim Gillani and the Sufi Music Ensemble perform original compositions based on classical poems of the Mughal era with a theme of Rah-e-Ishq – The Path of Love. Using rich metaphors, symbols, and stories of the past, musical compositions, and interpretations of modern art, the ensemble echoed the sentiments of tolerance and acceptance of the Mughal civilisation. The musicians used a variety of traditional instruments such as the santur, tombak, sarangi, flutes, Indian tablas, harmonium, and keyboard.

Our second session features a special conversation with past and present institutional leaders. Moderated by CTV’s Nafeesa Karim, this promises to be an engaging discussion filled with insights into the history of the Ismaili Centre, alongside footage from the Centre’s archives. Past Council for Canada President Farouk Verjee and past Council for British Columbia President Bahadur Karim will share their experiences and fondest memories of the Centre’s opening ceremony. We are joined by Luis Monreal, for a conversation on the work of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and its development of parks, gardens, and public spaces around the world. Join Dr. Zain Chagla, Dr. Karim Ali, and Moderator Shallah Jamal-Somani in a discussion about what is known about the virus, as well as the epidemiology both worldwide and in Canada. They will focus on risk factors, especially as it relates to age groups and medical conditions. The webinar is presented by frontline Infectious Disease Physicians. Dr. Zain Chagla: Completed his BSc and MD at Queen’s University, Internal Medicine Residency at Western University and an Infectious Diseases fellowship from McMaster University. He also has a Masters in Science (Infectious Diseases) and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is currently an Associate Professor at McMaster University, Co-Medical Director of Infection Control at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Niagara Health System, as well as a Consultant in Infection Control at Woodstock General Hospital. Through the COVID response, Dr. Chagla has been a part of policy planning locally, provincially, and federally. He has been a part of numerous clinical trials on COVID-19 therapies, as well as had multiple publications on COVID-19 research, epidemiology, testing, and infection control. Dr. Karim Ali: Attended Ziauddin Medical University in Karachi, Pakistan. He then went on to complete his Internal Medicine Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as his Infectious Disease Fellowship at Creighton University and University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Ali joined Niagara Health in 2012 and established the Division of Infectious Diseases. He currently serves as the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Niagara Health.
