The indigenous Sengwer people have been hunters and gatherers in Kenya’s Embobut
Forest and Cherengani Hills since ancient times. But unlike most traditional communities in Kenya, they were never given title to their land. The Kenya Forest Service has in the past tried to evict them from what is now a Forest Reserve. Violence erupted again in January 2018, when Sengwer herders were shot and killed. This story looks at the Sengwer’s struggle for land rights, exposes illegal logging by officials, and examines the challenges of inclusion when conservation and development collide with indigenous opposition. In this presentation by Alwaez Faisal Ali on July 26, 2020, he articulates the long tradition of Seva(service) in our faith touching on the history of the Ismaili Volunteer Corps and how Seva can be seen as a sacred duty- one that is guided by the ethical principles of our faith and an intelligent understanding of the needs of the Jamat.
Friday Night Reflections caps off National Volunteer Week with a special show honoring our volunteers. Host Salima Remtulla is joined by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable Janet Austin, and the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, for an inspiring conversation on the meaning of service, its importance to us and our communities, and how we can continue to stay motivated during these overwhelming times. Following this inspiring discussion, hear from volunteers across the country about their experiences and what keeps them driven to volunteer their time and knowledge, and end with a Family Challenge game show where volunteers from the East face off against the West to settle who is dominant in volunteer trivia.
