Today, on World Cancer Day, we look back on Mawlana Shah Karim's visit to East Africa in 2011, where the Heart and Cancer Centre in Nairobi was inaugurated.
In October 2017 Mawlana Shah Karim was conferred with the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa by His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni during Uganda’s 55th Independence Day celebrations. This is the highest civilian award of the Ugandan Honour System and has only been presented to five other individuals in the history of Uganda. Today, we look back on his Diamond Jubilee visit to Uganda and Tanzania.
Mawlana Shah Karim visited Madagascar during his Golden Jubilee in 2007. President Nishad Djaffar delivered a loyalty address to the Imam on behalf of the Jamat of Madagascar and the countries under its jurisdiction.
In March 2008, Mawlana Shah Karim travelled to the United Arab Emirates for a Golden Jubilee visit. During the busy four day trip, Mawlana Shah Karim met with the Jamat and presided over the historic opening of the Ismaili Centre Dubai.

During his Canadian visit, Mawlana Shah Karim met with the Governor-General of Canada, as well as senior government and Jamati leaders, and granted four Golden Jubilee Darbars across the country. Shah Karim was joined by the Prime Minister for the opening of the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Ottawa.
On 11 July 2007, Mawlana Shah Karim completed 50 years as Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismailis. Fifty years ago, at the age of 20, he succeeded his grandfather, Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. As part of the commemoration of Mawlana Shah Karim’s Golden Jubilee, Shah Karim made official visits to countries around the world. In addition to recognising the friendship and longstanding support of leaders of state, government and other partners in the work of the Ismaili Imamat, Mawlana Shah Karim granted some 26 Golden Jubilee Darbars to the worldwide Jamat. This film, Golden Jubilee Memories, provides an opportunity to relive the memories of those Golden Jubilee visits.

Mawlana Shah Karim made an eight-day Golden Jubilee visit to the United States from 11 – 19 April 2008. During the visit, Shah Karim granted Darbars in Texas, California, Illinois and Georgia, met with government leaders, and delivered the International Baccalaureate Organisation Peterson Lecture.
During his visit to Portugal, Mawlana Shah Karim met with senior government leaders, including the President and the Prime Minister, and together with the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, witnessed the signing of an agreement between the Catholic University of Portugal and the Aga Khan University. Shah Karim also met with senior Jamati leaders and granted a Golden Jubilee Darbar in Lisbon.
Mawlana Shah Karim granted the final Darbar of his Golden Jubilee in Paris, and was joined by Prince Amyn, Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya. Shah Karim also met with senior government and Jamati leaders in France, and signed an agreement between the AKDN and the French Republic.
Mawlana Shah Karim’s Golden Jubilee visits commenced with East Africa in August 2007. In Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, he met with the Jamat and with government and civic leaders. Mawlana Shah Karim also announced a number of significant new AKDN initiatives.
